Hydrotherapy is controlled exercise in warm water that is more intensive than normal exercise; it is non weight bearing and therefore there is zero impact on the limbs.
As a result of this, the exercise is gentler and stress free.
The warmth of the water, heated to 30 degrees, stimulates blood flow which in turn leads to an increase in circulation and improved cardiovascular (heart and lungs) fitness, this eases stiff, painful and swollen joints reducing pain and allowing the dog a greater range of movement.
The exercise in the water, which also provides a resistance, helps to build and strengthen muscle, thus creating a greater level of support to a potentially weakened skeletal system.
A dog that has a disability which prevents it from leading a normal healthy life can become depressed; this depression then leads to a poor sense of well being.
The reduced levels of pain and swelling, coupled with the increased circulation and gentle exercise achieved in the warm water assist in creating a greater sense of well being. This in itself can be fundamental to the ongoing recovery of the dog, much as in humans.
Not only is Hydrotherapy beneficial in helping to treat post operative conditions but also in building muscle and tissue prior to surgery which can then assist in the speed and / or extent of recovery post operatively.
