Winchelsea Countryside NT

Winchelsea Countryside NT consists of a variety of properties accessible to the public across the Winchelsea area.

Winchelsea:
The National Trust owns almost all open land in Winchelsea including earthworks preserved as pasture in the farmland, substantial open spaces within the original extent of the town, holloways and old tracks, ancient field boundaries, remnants of the medieval town and various ruined buildings (notably, St John's Gable and Blackfriars Barn).

Fairlight/Old Marsham Farm:
The property at Fairlight located at the southern end of Pett level comprises an area of land above and behind the cliff at Cliff End; and Old Marsham Farm, an area of farmland extending inland towards Pett Village. Old Marsham Farm contains 3 blocks of woodland: Stumblet wood is a semi ancient natural broad leaf woodland with wet flushes, Market wood is old mixed broad leaf with chestnut coppice, good oak standards and wet flushes and Magpie Hall wood consists of wet alder woodland.

The Royal Military Canal:
The Royal Military Canal runs for 28 miles between Seabrook Nr. Hythe and Pett Level while a 3 and a half mile stretch from Appledore to Warehorne is in National Trust ownership. It consists of the canal, bank, the back ditch and the original military road into which public access is encouraged.

Lake Field Battle:
Lake field is situated to the East of Battle Abbey and consists of 4.3 acres. The field was a part of the Manor of Battle Abbey prior to the dissolution of the monastaries, then granted to Sir Anthony Brown as part of a 100-acre estate. It was eventually given to The National Trust in 1936.
