How did Williamson Brown begin?

It was a combination of an interest in property and a desire to explore his creative side that led to the opening of Williamson Brown 20 years ago. When the opportunity arose to buy a former fruit and veg store on Clayton Road, Garry Williamson saw the potential this street offered to the independent retailer. Jesmond has always been a magnet for small niche operators and this was an ideal location to bring a unique product to the area.

Garry then went about implementing his plan and bringing his ideas to life. This meant sourcing new stock and offering a bespoke service to the customer and learning new skills. With an engineering background Garry learnt to quickly adapt his ability to fix and create, albeit through a very different medium to building services. He was trained under Tony Tigg, who made the engagement ring for Princess Diana, now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, his skill set was developed and has been refined over the years in response to his customers needs.

As well as the ability to make fine jewellery the shop needed to source good quality unusual stock. An encounter with Tiangus Jackson, a silver supplier, led to an action packed trip to Mexico where the first stock was bought. Mexico city had its challenges and Garry now reflects on how he escaped with his life as well as a pile of silver jewellery!

Over the years the shop has developed from selling silver to stocking a wide range of exclusive brands and fine jewellery. The store is proud to be stockists of many brands which are not available elsewhere in the region. Equally rewarding is the ability to have been involved in many engagements, marriages and celebrations over the 20 years. The most important thing to Garry and his loyal team are the customers. It has been unbelievably rewarding for Garry to have built up a loyal customer base who come back to the shop as he would not be where he is today without them. He hopes that will continue for another 20 years.
