The History Of Tyddyn Street Church

During the first part of the 19th century, workers came into Mold for work in industry. Many of these people were not Welsh speaking . The nonconformist churches had to adapt and the minister of Bethel Welsh Independent Chapel (Congregationalist) started English language services in his home.

In 1857 services were held above the Assembly Room in High Street, Mold. Seven years later the present Tyddyn Street English Congregationalist Church was established with English speaking members from both Bethel and Bethesda Calvanistic Methodists in New Street. The architect was W. W. Gwyther, who also designed the rebuilt Bethesda Chapel. The Church originally had a steeple but it was destroyed some years later by a storm.

Within 5 years the Tyddyn Street Church was the scene of the Mold riots - recorded and highlighted in the lithograph that appeared in the illustrated London News prepared by the firm of Pring and Price.
