More about Ty Gwyn yn Abermo

This page is about Ty Gwyn, reputedly one of the oldest buildings in the county with romantic associations and 15th and 16th century bardic descriptions. Once believed lost, Ty Gwyn was 'rediscovered' in the 1970s, emerging from its Victorian conversion to apartments to be restored to something like its original appearance.
It has been opened as a museum since the 1980s and now has an exhibition of the 'Bronze Bell Wreck' and other artefacts describing the wreck of 2 boats off Talybont beach a few miles north of Barmouth.
Recently, there have been attempts by the Dating Old Welsh Houses Group http://datingoldwelshhouses.co.uk/English2/ to get a specific date for the building of Ty Gwyn, first by dendrochronology and more recently by radiocarbon 14 testing but this has only produced a rough date for certain timbers that is much later than previously supposed - 18th or 19th century. This could be because of later repair, alteration or conversion to Ty Gwyn. There is now an effort to research other material and documentary evidence to help reveal more of the buildings story. We hope that anyone with an interest in Ty Gwyn who has information about its history will get in touch either by posting on here or messaging.
Let's see what we can find!
