Titanium, tungsten carbide and zirconium are three very tough alloys.

Titanium is much lighter and less dark in colour in comparison to tungsten. Despite these differences, the rings remain hard wearing - titanium is certainly one to consider for those looking for something slightly harder wearing. It is also hypoallergenic.

Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials known to man – about three times stronger than steel. Rings made from tungsten carbide are extremely hard wearing and resistant to scratching. With a density only slightly lower than that of platinum, tungsten rings are relatively heavy when worn and are exceptionally high quality.

Zirconium is a sister metal to titanium (and similar in weight), It is more commonly used in nuclear reactors and on space vehicles for thermal protection. Again, another metal to seriously consider if you are looking for something more hard-wearing. When zirconium is heat treated, it forms a very hard, protective layer, known as black zirconium which is an emerging popular choice for wedding rings. This blackened finish is very resistant to wear and tear.
