A lot of the food we buy today has a lot of sugar and also hidden sugar. What I have found is that where there is a tendency to opt for Low Fat versions of food, thinking they are the healthy option, those choices are often laden with additional sugar to compensate for the loss of flavour. Sugar is addictive. This blog aims to document the trials and tribulations of weening myself off sugar on an 8 week plan - the Dr Mike Mosley - Blood Sugar Diet. The vast quantities of sugar I was eating, was making me overweight, and I was 1 point away from being a Type 2 Diabetic. Subsequently, my internal organs were being affected and I had no choice but to stop further damage.
By starting out on the Blood Sugar Diet back in September 2016, I have learned more about how the plan works, and how overloading on carbohydrates (especially the cakes, biscuits, thick slice ormo white bread with a big knob of butter!) all impact on the vital organs inside of us. We can't see what's going on inside. For me, visceral fat - the thick yellow fat, starts to bind to your internal organs. The more you have the less function your organs have. When you start the 8 week plan, there are no carbohydrates, so once you have used what is stored in your liver for energy, your body turns to this yellow visceral fat instead for energy and starts to burn it off. That's how you get such good results in a short period of time. You will also be re-training your brain so that it no longer craves sugar, because you have stopped eating it. Even skinny people can have visceral fat. Dr Michael Mosley refers to these as 'skinny on the outside, fat on the inside'types! I was just fat outside and inside! Now I'm maintaining my weight loss by following the Mediterranean 5:2 lifestyle and that seems to work for me!
It's about eating proper natural food that hasn't been messed with - food that makes you full and kerbs any cravings. Once you have finished the plan, of course you can have a sugary treat now and then, that's ok so long as it is just now and then!
