More about The Seashells Hot & Cold Seafood Bar

The Seashells is owned and run by Mandy and her Daughters, born and bred in Londons East End. As proud Eastenders through and through, they we're raised on a staple diet of Pie, Mash and eels along with Seafood, and have warm memories of a good East End Sunday evening Seafoood Supper with bread and butter.

Mandy's uncle Bill was a fish trader, and ran a successful fish business out of Billingsgate Market throughout the 1970's and 80's, proudly supplying Fish to the wonderful East End Fish and Chip shops.

The East End, the traditions and the food of their childhood is in their blood.

Our Seafood is supplied by the legendary Barneys, who once operated a seafood stall at The Horse & Wells in Woodford. Mark Button, Barneys Managing Director, is the son of Eddie Button, who in early 1969 started a wholesale jellied eel business in a very small shop in Old Montague Street in East London supplying Seafood Stalls around London's East end.

Barney Gritzman was one of Eddies biggest customers; he ran a retail stall in Goulston Street, Aldgate, opposite the more famous Tubby Isaacs stall. Not many people know that Barney was the brother of Soloman Gritzman, the owner of Tubby Isaacs. Barney also operated a wholesale business from a larger premises in Chamber Street in Londons East End. When Barney decided to retire in1970, Eddie took over the business and the name Barneys, and the business still operates out of Chamber Street today.

In 1979 Tubby Isaacs sold their wholesale business, which was located inside the old Billingsgate Market, to Barneys. This gave Barneys a trading base inside Britains premier Fish Market which it kept until the fish market relocated in the early 1980's.

We are very proud to be part of the Barneys Family...
