The Round House Ilfracombe

Built by Mr William Balmont who started work in 1912 but died 1919 before it was completed with the First World war being partly responsible for the delay. One story tells that a local builder having erected an Octagonal summer house on the land was challenged to build a completely Round House below it.

A most unique and unusual home, The Round House sits next to the Cairn Nature Reserve enjoying extensive views over the town and out towards the Bristol Channel. Approached by a sweeping drive and surrounded by its own beautifully landscaped and private gardens. It has been a frequent winner of "Ilfracombe in Bloom".
All rooms are spacious and primarily regular in shape, boasting a wealth of period features. The piece de resistance is the unusual rotunda room at the very top of the building offering spectacular 360 degree views.
With a turreted entrance porch and double doors open into the hallway with parquet flooring, feature ceiling and gothic style doors. The spacious living room has excellent sea views, chandeliers and arts and crafts period oak fireplace. The dining room is complemented with an Adam style fireplace and an impressive ornate mahogany table that accommodates family gatherings perfectly seating 10-14 people. A separate compact kitchen has an adjoining breakfast room, and substantial utility room providing storage. There is also a convenient ground floor cloakroom with shower. There are five bedrooms in total on the first floor with bedroom one having an adjacent separate 'snug' TV room. The House sleeps up to ten people (three double and two twin rooms) to which all are served by an unusual art deco style bathroom with an additional shower room on the ground floor. A separate staircase leads up to the rotunda room which has a small flat screen TV, games, table football and some seating.
A private terrace overlooks the gardens, and trees shrubs and fernery adorn several lawned areas. In an elevated position to take full advantage of the lovely sea views a comfortably furnished summerhouse/cabin with power is a recent addition to the garden.

We currently let our House out through Marsdens cottage holidays who do an amazing job. We have had the pleasure of welcoming and meeting some amazing and friendly families and always look forward to seeing returning and first time guests.
