The Logistics Traning Academy was opened by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, in 2014. Operated by the port, the academy is a fully equipped training centre. Skills training is seen as essential to support Tilbury's programme of investment in port centric logistics activities. Over 13000 transport and logistics jobs will be created in the coming years. The Port is central to this projected employment growth .
The Academy is located within the port estate, it offers pre-employment training, traineeships, apprenticeships and advanced apprenticeships to the wider community. The Academy works in close partnership with Thurrock Council, Job Centre Plus and Ixion Holdings (Part of Anglia Ruskin University) to provide a range of traineeships and apprenticeships in both technical and soft skill training.
Many students who have attended the academy have moved on to apprenticeships and other permanent positions with the port.
