The Hall Tendring was built in the seventeenth century on the site of an earlier house that was used as a hunting lodge by King Stephen. In 1927 it was enlarged and the gardens laid out by Percy Cane also mentioned in his book.
The Cedar of Lebanon on the main lawn is reputed to be over six hundred years old.
Tendring Church was at one time owned by the manor of Tendring. The advowson (appointment of the clergy) has since been passed to Balliol College, Oxford. The church itself is well worth a visit and its famous for its Hammer Beam roof truss which is reputed to be the oldest in the country, predating the roof of Westminster Hall.
