More about Tatworth Playing Fields

The Tatworth Playing Fields were purchased in 1970, by the then, Chard Parish Council, by money from the rates and a grant from the Ministry of Education and Science. On 22nd March 1973 a trust deed was set up to give management and control to Tatworth Playing Fields Management Committee.

We have to thank Mrs Churchill who donated us the ground, at a very reasonable price for recreational purposes for Tatworth and Forton inhabitants to enjoy. The deeds state, that it cannot be built on.

The Management Committee originally borrowed £6000 to build the Pavilion, with the Parish Council being guarantors; this work was mainly done by volunteers, from the village.

As the years have passed, tennis courts and a children’s play area were added. Later one tennis court was adapted for a MUGA, which is greatly enjoyed by all including the children from the village Primary School. We are continually updating and maintaining our equipment, especially in the children’s play area and recently this was upgraded with some timber apparatus along with a new safety surface. Funds to pay for these upgrades is raised by the Management Committee through various functions and events and you will find details on the website. It should be emphasised that we are not a council owned playing field and as a registered charity we have to be self financed.

We were extremely lucky to receive a grant of £254,670 from The Football Foundation in 2007, which enabled us to extend and improve the changing and club room facilities. The club room which hosts a licensed bar, is available for hire and is used by many clubs to meet socially from the village and surrounding area.
