Samsung Electronics is present in several markets, with four major divisions. Mobile telephony has represented 26.64% of sales in 2010, with 280 million phones sold worldwide. Samsung is ranked world number 1 at Nokia, with models such as the Galaxy s2 or Wave 3, and also the first in terms of smartphone sales (20%) to Apple (19%) in 2011.
The second division, however, LCD is the production of LCD panels for the manufacture of computer monitors, telephones, televisions. Samsung is the global leader. This activity accounted for 19.34% of group sales in 2010, with 172 million sold slabs. But Samsung is facing falling prices. On 26 December 2011, Samsung Electronics announced that it bought out Sony in their manufacturing joint venture S-LCD LCD panel (in) created in April 2004 to 1,008 billion won (671 million).
The third activity is consumer electronics, digital media, that is to say flat screens, refrigerators, cameras, printers. Again, the highly competitive detracts from the profitability of the business, which represented 37% of sales in 2010 but only 2.8% of operating profit of the group.
The fourth group's business is semiconductors, where Samsung is world number 2 behind Intel. Samsung's specialization lies in the memories (DRAM and Flash), where she is a world leader with over 50% market share. The memory segment represents two thirds of the semiconductor industry. This activity, which represents 24.3% of sales, in 2010 provided 58% of operating profit of the group and helps fund the investments of the entire group.
