More about Royle Bowling & Billiards Club

The Royle Bowling & Billiards Club was formed on the 26th November 1898 in the Roylelands district of nineteenth century Castleton. Our first home was on Grove Street, near the old Farewell Inn on Manchester Road and reportedly cost £2,300. The original brass key is still on site today.

Prior to having its own Bowling Green, members could play on the nearby green at the rear of the old Farewell Inn. In later years, the club would use the Bowling Green belonging to engineering firm Tweedale & Smalley. The Railway Approach offered The Royle a temporary home in the upper room of what was believed to be a tea house.

In 1953 the club move into our current premises which were formerly a vicarage to the adjacent St Martins Church. In the mid 1990’s significant work took place to the clubs interior which included the relocation of the bar area & snooker table.

Improvements continued in the 2010’s with the construction of new ladies toilets, TV & Pool Room & refurbished committee room. Enhancements were made to the bowling area in partnership with the Barret Homes development of the former Whipp & Bourne industrial site

Today the club maintains a clean friendly environment, managed by an elected committee who aim to support the traditions of the club whilst adapting to the challenges the future holds.
