The first Read Easy group was established in Dorchester and Weymouth in September 2010. Founder Ginny Williams-Ellis was at that time a literacy tutor at Dorchester Prison. She was responsible for setting up and running the Shannon Trust’s Toe by Toe peer mentoring reading plan, which enables one prisoner to teach another to read.
The success of this prison scheme highlighted the unmet need for a one-to-one approach to tackling literacy problems in the wider community. Further investigation revealed that there were many people who could benefit.
