WHAT IS SATELLITE BROADBAND?

Put simply, it is a broadband connection that is bounced from earth to a satellite and then to the user. Reception is via a satellite dish, and it is best described as being like satellite TV but transmitting broadband rather than TV signals. The major difference between it and satellite TV is that while the TV system can only receive, two-way satellite broadband can transmit information also.

WHY MIGHT I NEED SATELLITE BROADBAND?

Not everyone has the convenience of a nearby broadband enabled telephone exchange, an essential part of the broadband connection. Standard ADSL broadband is transmitted using the already-present phone line, and as such requires a land line at the destination. Many people who live in rural or lightly populated areas do not have landline capability, and if you are one of these people you can get your broadband and internet access by satellite.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF SATELLITE BROADBAND?

The major advantage of satellite broadband is that it does not require that restrictive telephone line. You are accessing and transmitting information to and from a satellite orbiting far above the earth. This means you can use satellite broadband from any location, no matter how remote, so long as the correct equipment has been installed.

Much has been made of the fact that satellite broadband is slower than the standard variety, but this is a pointless comparison when users have no option. The latest satellites, launched over the last year, are the most advanced so far and promise speeds of up to 22Mbps, easily comparable with the majority of standard broadband connections.
