More about Rainbow Shakespeare

Shakespeare done properly isn't "difficult" or hard to understand. He just tells a good story - fights, murder, love ... what more could any audience or an actor want! Shakespeare does not need gimmicks or weird interpretations to make the plays accessible to modern audiences.

The plays speak for themselves - given actors who understand and enjoy playing them. Rainbow actors are used to working together in an ensemble. We want to make every audience feel we are playing to them - uniquely.

No two performances are the same. That is where live-theatre can win hands down over film or television.

RAINBOW SHAKESPEARE 2013

Yes, we’re back, under the stars, doing what we love doing best, and audience enjoy being part of: Shakespeare – fun, exciting, understandable and inspiring for all ages. A six year old can sit with the rug-seated picnickers close to the action and be spell-bound by seeing Shakespeare for the first time, and a Bard aficionado (fan) can sit back in their picnic chair and savour the productions afresh, and audiences of all ages can just celebrate being part of that unique experience: Rainbow Shakespeare.

This year we are back in Worthing’s magical Highdown Gardens, but playing on the original site, the lower lawn, which gives audiences a better view of the stage – ( and less ‘on the tilt’). We are also adding two new venues to our season: playing on the South West Lawn of the awe-inspiring Chichester Cathedral, as part of the Festival of Chichester; and in St Ann’s Well Scented Garden in Hove. It is exciting knowing we can bring the productions to whole, new audiences.

ROMEO & JULIET needs no introduction. It is quite simply the world’s greatest love story, and every member of the audience will find echoes of their own experiences of being in love. Apart from the passion, ecstasy and eventual tragedy of the star-crossed lovers, the play’s lasting appeal is that it combines broad-comedy, thrilling sword-fights, great characters and some of the greatest lines of poetry ever written. The themes of intolerance and understanding, youth and age, lust and pure love are all joined in the fast-moving action. The wonderful thing about Shakespeare is that you can watch the same play a hundred times, and each time you find something new and amazing.

THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR is Rainbow Shakespeare’s second offering this season. Queen Elizabeth I asked to see a play depicting the fat knight Falstaff in love – and here is the joyous, rumbustious result. Sir John Falstaff, low in funds but high in lust and optimism, sets to work to seduce the good wives of Windsor, to the consternation of jealous husbands and outraged citizens. Add a kaleidoscope of colourful characters including a furious Frenchman, an indignant Welshman, and a foolish suitor not to mention a bevy of mischievous scheming women, and all is set for a evening of wonderful misunderstandings culminating at Herne the Hunter’s Oak in Windsor Park, where Falstaff, dress as a Buck Deer……..but no more – that will spoil the story. Come and find out- and tell your friends!
