Stretching is beneficial for anybody of any age.
For athletes it can be used as a part of a well rounded cross training program. Many people who exercise regularly of train for competiton focus heavily on streghth and/or cardivascular training and neglect to stretch correctly and for long enough. This can cause ongoing tightness and tension in the muscles andleading to injury. The three cornerstones of well-rounded fitness are stamina, strength & flexibility. Stretching is an essential tool for any athlete.

When sitting on your chair for extended periods of time, you develop tight muscles of the upper back and neck. This can cause tension and headaches leading to lethargy.
In addition, the hamstring muscles become inactive and are held at a shortened length. This develops tight hamstrings, which are directly associated with back pain and poor posture.
