New Horizon
Studying Business at College and obtaining a distinction*, I was keen on how I could progress in the business world. I also had an interest in Law but not being great at exams, I lacked self-confidence and the funds to pursue it. I had seen my Dad face two redundancies and my Mum studying accounts late into the night to achieve a better career. So I developed an interest in business, however I wanted my career to be secure, successful and stimulating.
I was excited when I entered the world of work aged 18 years old and what my qualification would mean for me. My boyfriend was working locally and the company were always seeking data entry staff so I applied. I would stay 6 months whilst I found something more exciting and where I could learn, achieve and obtain experience in business.
The opportunity didn't come, my business course didn't seem to count for anything and there were no jobs at my fingertips. I remained where I was as it was comfortable, every day was the same, I would hit the snooze button day in and day out dreading another boring day of data entry! in addition to which, my boyfriend and I were stuck not being able to afford a place of our own.
Aged 20 I had given up hope of finding something to inspire and motivate me, when out of the blue I was contacted by a Lawyer I had done work experience with some 5 years earlier. Enquiring about whether I had pursued a career in law and what I was up too, she remembered I was bright, motivated and somehow reminded me of who I had wanted to become and who I was. We chatted and now no longer practising law but being a business owner, I was invited to see if I would be interested in a new venture. I jumped at the chance and only a few weeks later had started my own business with a mentor to support, share and collaborate with me. I have huge plans for my future including giving up the day job, getting our own mortgage, travel and more. Now, every day is a different day, a new horizon and not the same.
