A visit will entail a detailed history taking, whilst quietly acquainting myself with your horse or pony.
I then do a full assessment of the entire musculoskeletal system: All major muscle groups are tested for spasm, pain, tension and movement; many acupuncture points are assessed, giving an overview of areas of pain and tension; limbs are assessed for pain, range of motion, and strength. The back is given a brief scan for areas of chiropractic subluxation or reduced range of motion; other tests, including stretches and reflexes, are performed to give an overal view of comfort and function.
Gait analysis is then performed. This can comprise a brief trot up, or a detailed lunge with basic flexion tests if indicated.
The saddle and tack can be given a generalised assessment for fit and suitability.
Treatment is commenced. Treatment comprises usually of a combination of acupuncture, chiropractic and physiotherapy. Needles are placed directly or indirectly to reduce pain and facial tension. Chiropractic adjustments are carried out on all joints that require it (not just in the spine). Physiotherapy, including massage, stretching and use of appropriate machines if indicated.
A comprehensive exercise program is provided, and a full report sent to both you and your referring vet.
Follow up visits are generally slightly shorter, but comprise of a full treatment unless a specific treatment (such as therapeutic ultrasound on a tendon) is required.
