Muscular Dystrophy Charity Shop

Following the decision by Muscular Dystrophy UK to surrender the lease it holds for the shop on Warwick Parade, the business in its current format will be closing by the end of September. Over the last twenty-one years Audrey Hatcher, assisted by her team of dedicated helpers and with the support of South Woodham Ferrers, have raised over half a million pounds for this worthy cause.

Approximately six weeks later, following a complete makeover and re-fit, a new concept in “charity shopping” will open its doors and commence trading. Building on Audrey’s sound legacy and operating as an incorporated “not-for-profit company” Mister Gees Foundation will run the premises to raise funds for the provision of educational and vocational opportunities aimed at young persons that might otherwise be unable to access the system through lack of finance or contacts. It will seek to target those wishing to enter teaching, farming, fishing or water management.

Whilst the refurbished charity shop will operate like most others it will however adhere to that old saying “charity begins at home” as not less than 50% of all the profit generated will be donated to good causes or groups within the geographical boundary of South Woodham Ferrers (as defined by Essex County Council) with an independent group of local residents being selected to accept applications for and oversee the distribution of these funds.
