Based just outside the small town of Randalstown, Martin Hurls is
a traditional Irish hurley making business. Martin Hurls is keen to embrace the historical art of hurley making, as all hurleys are handmade using handcraft methods with traditional equipment such as a plane and a spokeshave. This is to create a hurley shape which is consistent and also suits the individual needs of customers.


Emmet has had an interest in hurling sticks from a very young age. After a few years of repairing broken hurleys along with his father Colum, Emmet tried his hand at making a few Camans from Ash that was growing in their own home field. Emmet always tries to use the best ash available focusing on the grain and density of the wood. This ensures the production of sticks to the highest quality. Emmet’s hurleys are of a modern design with Local club members enjoy playing with a ‘Martin Hurl’ and hurlers and camogs including county players from further afield also buy the sticks. Initially sales were to individuals but GAA clubs, schools and shops have recently been included in the customer base. Martin hurls have been exported worldwide. Destinations include Scotland, England, Wales, Belgium, Italy, USA, New Zealand and Australia.


The shape of the hurley has changed dramatically from the days of Christy Ring and Nicky Rackard to the modern day greats of Henry Shefflin and Eoin Kelly, although the shape and pattern has changed the effort, time and method of production has stayed the same throughout the years.
