More about Lochee Amateur Boxing Club

The lochee boys club was founded in 1947 in the weavers hall on lochee high street by three brother Andy, Ned & John Lynch. After demob Ned Lynch heard a noise coming from the weavers hall and on invesigation he met a priest with 3 or 4 young boys around the age of 7 who were kicking a ball around the hal, within a few weeks Andy and john were also demobbed and were informed by Ned that he was running a boys club, it was then the three brothers set about forming The Lochee boys club. Andy was made club leader, john made secetary and Ned was made Treasurer. The Lynch brothers scoured the streets of lochee recruiting teenagers and young men to built up the club. To date many first members of the club are still connected to the club including Ernie Ross (retired M.P.) and Charles Farquhar (ex Dundee Lord Provost), there the lads in the club participated in all activities, boxing, football and gym.

Through time from the club being in the weavers hall we moved to feenies hall( star ballroom) for a year, then again moved into the salvation army hall in marshall st. The club resided there for many years untill the wall were falling in and in need of repair, then we were able to purchase the Y.W.C.A, thanks to the wonderful Mr.R.Ogilvy Smith this was our home for quite a few years and then we moved to our present premises in Wellbank Lane. As you have now read all our premises were in the Lochee District and the locals said we were ''the heart'' of Lochee.

Over the many years on the boxing side we were served well within the sixties, Jimmy Frazer and Alec Elder, in the seventies the burn brothers Gordon Alec and Robert, in the eighties, the Buchanan brothers Albert and Billy and from the nineties to present time the Howett brothers Andy and Jerry. There were many hundreds more to mention.

On the football side the great revelation was the introduction of the famous Greer brothers George, Wullie and Lewiswho ran the football like professionals, lifting every cup under 18 levels and many more besides, They also won the British 5 a side cup. After the Greer years, the club was successful under many managers like Bobby Scott, John Mcpake and Paul Wallace.

Andy Lynch's son won the Brittish Trampoline Championship and represented Scotland at water polo. We as a club have been very successful in many sports over the years and pride ourseves on the very good citizens we have had the good fortune to have within our club.

We have had some memorable influences in the club our chairman was Mr.R.Ogilvie Smith who was a true gentleman and ourbenefactor Mr. Angus Gourlay who was our treasurer, cleaner, gardener and organiser! For many years Mr. Jim Scott was our boxing coach. Without these men and many many more, we as a club could not have functioned.

After the death of John and Ned Lynch, the running of the club has now been taken over since 1974 by Derek Lynch who is the son of Andy, who now in 2011 is in his 56th year as a ''Lochee Boy''.
