More about Liftingstane Holiday Cottages

This wonderfully spacious and well-equipped, semi-detached barn conversion has been created from the original farm steading. Well-equipped for families, there is a travel cot, highchair and baby bath provided. Set in a very rural location in the mid-section of the beautiful Nith Valley in Dumfriesshire on the A76, near to the small village of Closeburn and 3 miles from Thornhill. There is a choice of activities locally to suit all ages including walking, cycling, golfing, fishing and birdwatching. Enjoy a round of golf at the local 18-hole course in Thornhill, or if fishing is your thing, the River Nith provides numerous areas to fish for salmon and trout (licence required). Drumlanrigg Castle and Gardens (home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry), Ellisland (once home to Robert Burns), Charles Jenck’s Garden of Cosmic Speculation and the world-class mountain biking routes, the 7 Stanes, are all on your doorstep. 20 minutes south is the town of Dumfries, with its museum, Camera Obscura, Robert Burns’ Trails, Gracefield Arts Centre, Dalscone Farm, Farmer Den, cinema, ice-rink, swimming pool, restaurants, tea rooms and shops are sure to keep the whole family entertained. More family activities can be found slightly further a field. These include the likes of Charles Jenck’s Crawick Multiverse, Cream O’ Galloway, Mabie Farm Park, Laggan Outdoor Centre, Caerlaverock Castle and Wetlands Centre, the red kite feeding station, and not forgetting that the Galloway Forest Park is one of the darkest places in Scotland, which is why it’s the UK’s first Dark Sky Park and is excellent for stargazing. A day trip to the rugged coastline and seaside, with visits to the quaint villages and towns such as Kippford, Sandyhills, Southerness and Kirkcudbright will complete your holiday. This is an excellent base from which to explore this fascinating region as it is centrally based in south west Scotland for day trips to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stranraer or Carlisle which are all within a 1½ hour drive. If you fancy a stress free day without driving, jump on a train at Dumfries or Lockerbie. Or why not just relax in the peace and quiet at the cottage, on the garden patio whilst tucking into a delicious barbecue and a glass of wine, and on a clear night, simply gaze at the stars. Shop, pubs and restaurant, 3 miles.
