More about Kirstie's Star Dancing School

Welcome to Kirstie’s Star Dancing School, here’s all about us. My names Kirstie Murray and I am the principle and owner of the school. We have three student’s teachers; we have Grace Thomas, Keighley Johnson and Isobel Ewart and our street dancer Ricky Alexis.

The History-
The new dancing school opened in September 2012, the dance was first established by Jenny Hunt and was called ‘Jenny Hunt School of Dance’ and was running for over 40 years.
I was trained by Jenny Hunt and took all my exams with her and I danced there since I was 3 years old until July 2012 in her last show.

Aim-
Kirstie’s Star Dancing School has classes for all abilities and ages. We aim to provide fun and enjoyment for the students along with some discipline. Our classes are fun and will teach the children technique and knowledge of all different styles of dance, whether it is for fun or to go on later to dance college in the future. We are considered a friendly and supportive school to all of our staff, pupils and other competing schools.

Classes Available from 2years and above-

Tap Classes: Tap is rhythm and rhythm is tap. Americans claim the origin of tap dates back to the African Jazz age. The Irish believe that tap came from the Jigs and Step Dancing. The English relate back to northern Clog Dancers. Tap really became popular in the times of the great Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly musicals .Our classes follow the IDTA tap syllabus for pupil’s age 4 years through to adult classes.

Ballet Classes: Ballet dates back to the 17th century and the conventional steps, grace and fluidity of movement seen then, are still found in Ballet today. Ballet is based on perfect body alignment, strength and flexibility producing a distinctive classic line. Our classes follow the IDTA syllabus for pupil’s age 2 1/2 years up to pupils studying grade 5. At the age of 14 years girls can start to learn pint work.

Modern Classes: Modern dance is a rhythmic and energetic dance style which originated in America. Commonly seen in musical productions modern dance is known for theatrical qualities. Modern uses grounded travelling steps, kicks, leaps and turns which all develop strength and flexibility. Our classes start at 5 years and go through to adult.

Street & Break Dance Classes: Think Diversity and Flawless. These classes are diverse, energetic and reflect current dance trends. Pupils learn effective routines, up rock, down rock, freezes and power moves. We have only one class and the ages start at 5 years and will add more classes as it builds up.

Disco/Jazz & Freestyle Classes: These are forms of modern dance, which began in the 1970s in America. Steps from modern dance are developed in varied styles with combinations of rhythmical arm and hand gestures. These techniques offer great diversity and allow the body more freedom. Disco /freestyle are offered to pupils over 3 years, we follow IDTA syllabus.

Uniform-

We have a set uniform and you can order it all from me. The uniform is part of health and safety, so we do ask pupils to be completely dressed in correct uniform for every class. Having students in uniform when we are at dancing events makes it easier to locate and identify which dance school they are from, it also makes our pupils look very smart. We would like students to come to classes with their hair tied up neatly and without any jewellery on.

Behaviour of pupils-

As a school we expect all students and parents to behave appropriately. If anyone behaves badly or offends other members of the school you will warned and if behaviour does not approve you will be asked to leave. Bullying and rudeness is not behaviour we will tolerate.

About our Stuff-

All staff is CRB checked, experienced, and trained by us. First aiders and assistants are always on site. Mrs Hunt is a welcomed face and comes down and helps with the checking in of the children, I also have three student teachers which help me on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday and they are working towards their teaching exams.

What we work towards in the year-

Throughout the year we work on the IDTA syllabus and work towards exams. We will do two exams in a year. We also do a big show every two years and the next show is in July 2014. The months leading up to the show we focus on the choreography for the show, therefore there will not be any exam work taking place. The show will take place at a theatre and all family members can come and watch. We also do little shows in our dance hall at Christmas and near the summer so parents can see what the pupils do in the year. We also get involved with the New Malden fortnight parade and the day of dance. We try and get involved in fun things for all the children.
