More about Kielder Observatory

The Kielder Observatory is a centre for public outreach in the science of astronomy and physics. It serves to promote the universe to our guests, enabling people from all walks of life and levels of interest to access the visual splendour of the cosmos. It is also part of an international research programme and used by students carrying out astronomical observations and cosmological experiments.

Situated in probably the darkest night sky location in England, in the depths of the magnificent Kileder Forest, the observatory provides spectacular opportunities to see celestial objects such as planets, stars and galaxies in breathtaking detail.

We hold around 150 events a year when the observatory is open to the public (booking is essential through our website) with open days and talks covering diverse aspects of cosmology and space exploration such as the Big Bang, the hunt for alien life, the Hubble telescope, meteor showers, the scale of the universe and the Northern Lights. Sit in complete comfort in our eco-classroom, next to the log burning fire and let us take you on a tour of the universe!

Illustrated talks are at a level for anyone with an interest in looking beyond our planet and children are especially welcome. Kielder Observatory staff members and volunteers are always on hand to enhance your visit and questions, discussions and cosmological debate are actively encouraged!

After the presentations we move into the observatories to view the depths of space within the surrounding universe using our superb array of large telescopes and instrumentation.

Share a night under the stars with the experts!
