Playhouse Creatures tells the story of five of the best-known actresses of the Restoration Era, when women were first allowed on stage: Nell Gwyn, Elizabeth Farley, Rebecca Marshall, Doll Common and Mary Betterton, and the many challenges they face as they try to gain respect and independence, demanding shares in the company and taking pride in their work, but ultimately still living at the mercy of men. The action switches between heightened onstage performances (often going wrong) and the frantic and vicious backstage dressing room.
