Huitzilin

"Huitzilin" means "hummingbird" in Nahuatl, one of the many indigenous languages spoken in Mexico. In the ancient cultures of that beautiful country, these tiny, beautiful animals are often associated with strength, courage and love. In Huitzilin, we admire these characteristics in Mexican artisans, whose relentlessness and love for what they do is forever reflected in the beauty of the objects they make. Not only that, but, in a country like Mexico, where economic and social crisis means the arts and the local cultures very rarely receive the support they deserve, Mexican artisans must indeed show courage, as they more often than not are amongst the part of the population that suffers greater social injustice. In spite of that, however, or, perhaps precisely because of that, people around the world can never help but being moved by the beautiful creations of those hands that lovingly craft and decorate each single piece as a little treasure, and then offer it with a smile on their faces, in spite of all.
Both those object and smiles are the inspiration behind Huitzilin, a fair trade business that seeks to promote and sell the work of these wonderful people and, in so doing, contribute to their well being and commercial development. We put extra effort in dealing directly with the artisans (whether individuals or cooperatives), not with distributors. We allow them to put a fair price for their work and we respect it. We promote their work, wherever possible, with background information on both the object an the artist and, finally, we sell at fair prices that are representative of the quality of their work, and which allow us to continue to help them develop their business and improve their quality of life. AND we make a point of prioritizing cruelty-free. environmentally responsible products!
