More about House of Dun

The House of Dun is a beautiful Georgian house, overlooking Montrose Basin, with later Victorian influences both structurally and decorative. The house is situated within the Dun Estate which has been in the possession of the Erskine family since 1375.

The House of Dun is the third house in which the Erskine’s have lived in over the course of 21 generations till the last Laird, Mrs Millicent Lovett (nee Erskine), died in 1980.

Construction began in 1730, following the finalisation of the design by William Adam, and was completed in 1744. The design follows the popular neo-classic style of a Palladian mansion which was all the rage back in the Georgian era.
The house features superb plasterwork, by Joseph Enzer, including Jacobite themes and ancient gods.

The house was modernised in the Victorian era by John Erskine Kennedy Erskine and his wife Lady Augusta Kennedy Erskine (nee Fitz Clarence). Lady Augusta left a legacy in the from of several stunning pieces of needlework ranging from curtains to fire screens.

Outside, enjoy the attractive walled garden, woodland walks, children’s adventure playground or visit the historic family graveyard and mausoleum. There is the chance to play croquet on our traditional croquet lawn from June to the end of August. And in the autumn months fairy trails outside and later on reindeer hunts too!
