More about High Tor Hotel

Situated in Matlock Dale between the country town of Matlock and the spa town of Matlock Bath, this beautiful grade II listed building was first built in the early 1800’s by Colonel Edward Payne. Throughout its 200 year history this building has seen many changes in how it is utilized, has a rich history of families living in the property and has even seen the odd name change.

Colonel Edward Payne who owned a number of properties within the area first named the property the Ivy Cottage, since then it has gone to be known as Tor Cottage, Tor House, High Tor Guest House, up to its current name the High Tor Hotel. The building itself has been used for a number of purposes from private dwellings, a lodging/guest house, a hotel and even a school (Matlock Modern School).

Unfortunately in 2007 the building was the victim to a devastating fire leaving very little of the original features intact, which given the rich history of the building is even more tragic. Having been left derelict for 5 years the building was purchased by a family new to the area and under the shadow of the Tor to which the building is named after they set about restoring the property to its former glory.

Having spent approximately £3m on the restoration project, the building is back in all its splendor. Many of the original features have been recreated or returned and the modern interior compliments these features to breathe new life and welcome guests with open arms. Whether you are a guest of the hotel or popping in for a coffee, we would recommend taking a look around to admire its beauty and appreciate the effort involved in restoring the building to its original magnificent condition.
