What is Counselling and how can it help you?

Counselling is different to any other relationship you have with friends and family because the therapeutic relationship is about YOU and your needs. Friends and family can be good listeners and advice givers, however, sometimes this advice, well intended as it may be, may not be right for you. Or maybe not right at this time. Sometimes other peoples advice is based on what they would do, not necessarily what is right for you. You may also feel reluctant to talk openly and honestly with friends and family because you don't want then to worry, and if they do, you may feel responsible for their feelings and tend to their needs. A counselling relationship is none of the above.

Counselling is a form of talking therapy that can help you identify problems, including negative thoughts and feelings that are impacting on your life. The aim of counselling is to help you deal and overcome these issues that are causing emotional distress by working together in a safe and empathic environment. As you begin to face these issues in therapy you will hopefully gain new insight and clarity that can help you to move on or accept situations differently. Sometimes this in itself can be a challenging process, and you may not notice any changes for a number of sessions. However, with a firm commitment you are more likely to benefit from therapy.

During counselling you will be encouraged to express your thoughts and feelings as this can help you gain a better understanding, as well as identify your own solutions to problems. However, sometimes you may not be looking for a solution and simply want to talk through something that is or has caused you emotional pain. Some people find that it can be a relief to share and express their feelings in a safe and supportive environment where they will not be judged. Counselling therefore provides a confidential setting for this to happen.
