Freeman's Reach

Freeman's Reach is a regeneration project that will be the catalyst for the further regeneration of Durham City's Riverside.

It will become the first hydro-powered city centre development in the UK.

An electricity generator (hydro-turbine) powered by an Archimedean screw will provide more than 75% of the power required for Freeman’s Reach.

Phase One of Freeman’s Reach will be the new home of National Savings & Investments (NS&I).

Their relocation from their current offices on the opposite side of the river, in Milburngate House, will ensure these important jobs are retained in Durham.

In total Freeman’s Reach will provide 8,000 square metres of high quality office space enabling the retention and creation of around 800 high value city centre jobs.

In addition, Freeman’s Reach will also feature a tree-lined riverside walk and a visitors’ centre which will enhance the City’s visitor experience, particularly for those arriving by coach heading for the City’s attractions and amenities.
