Walks
An Sgurr

An Sgurr is prominent on the skyline of the Isle of Eigg, and is one of the main attractions for walkers on the island. Standing at 393m, it offers spectacular views of the Small Isles, Skye and the mainland. On a clear day, you can see all the way from the Isle of Mull to the Outer Hebrides. An Sgurr was formed 58 million years ago as a result of one of the last volcanic erruptions, the core of which now forms the Isle of Rùm. This walk offers a good chance to spot the large native raptors on the island, both the White Tailed Sea Eagle and the Golden Eagle.

Price: £10 per person
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 3-4 Hours

Grulin

Also known as the ‘stony place’, Grulin has a sad history. Once a thriving community, it was subject to the Highland Clearances and hasn’t been inhabited since 1853. You’ll be able to visit the ancient ruins and listen to stories about the people who live there. Showing you hidden gems such as the Well of the Holy Women, Craig will bring this historic community to life.

Price: £10 per person
Difficulty: Leisurely
Time: 2-3 Hours

Cathederal Cave and Massacre Cave

Situated on the south coast of the island, steeped in history and legend the Massacre Cave, or the Cave of Francis as it is also known, was once said to have a dragon dwelling inside. Craig will share with you the thrilling and sometimes gruesome histories of these caves. This walk offers views over the Isle of Muck and Ardnamurchan, and weaves it’s way through the green pastures above Galmisdale Bay.

Price: £10 per person
Difficulty: Leisurely (some steep paths)
Time: 2-3 Hours

Kildonan and the Braes Settlement

This stunning walk will take you towards the east of the island along the coast, walking through tunnels of hazel coppice, you’ll breathe in the abundant wild garlic. For those who enjoy flora and fauna, look out for the purple orchids, and the sunbathing seals. This walk will take to the ruins of Kildonan Church and through the old Braes settlement on the slopes of An Cruachan.

Difficulty: Leisurely
Time: 2-4 Hours

Galmisdale and Lodge Gardens

A shorter walk starting at Galmisdale Bay, this walk will take you along to the historic and picturesque Clanranald Pier, through the woods to the imposing Lodge and formal gardens of the former Laird, before returning to Galmisdale Bay through the Kelpie Woods.

Price: £10 per person
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 1.5 – 2.5 Hours

Sand and Sky Tour

This is a long walk aimed at keen walkers, and is not recommended for wee ones or those who may struggle with being on their feet for a long time.

This walks starts at the centre of the island, at the old shop where there is a small exhibition telling the story of the 1997 buyout of the Isle of Eigg. From here we’ll explore the forestry, following the winding track down to the Bay of Laig, where we’ll have spectacular views over the Isle of Rum which apparently inspired Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings.

From here we’ll ascend the cliffs of Bhein Bhuidhe and follow the cliff edge path before descending the slopes to the Singing Sands, where it’s said mermaids once lived. The Singing Sands offer a spectacular natural display of geology.

This walk ends at the Rest and Be Thankful Cafe where you can rest your feet and enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of Libby’s homemade cake, enjoying the views and savouring the memories.
