More about Edgeley, (Stockport)

Reference to Edgeley, or Eddyshelegh can be traced back to the early part of the thirteenth century. Saint Matthew's Church was built in 1843 on the site of the Brinksway Chapel. Built in 1823, this Chapel was popularly called the 'Beef-Steak Chapel' as it was built by a number of men, in shares of one pound each, to encourage the spread of vegetarianism. Rooms were rented out to raise funds for the cause!
