MORE THAN JUST A LANDSCAPE...
...it’s a legacy
The Lower Derwent Valley covers 71km2 from
Bonsall and Matlock Bath in the north to the Silk Mill in Derby in the south. It is a special place where the gentle landscape of the lowlands of England meets the rugged uplands of the Peak District. It is home to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site; the birthplace of the factory system. It includes one of the largest concentrations of ancient woodland in England, archaeology, diverse geology, wildflower meadows and river habitats. It’s a living working
landscape with a real heritage and future, making it all the more important to preserve and protect.
The DerwentWISE Landscape Partnership, hosted by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, is made up of fifteen local and national bodies all with an interest in the Lower Derwent Valley. The £2.5 million five-year project was granted £1.7 million of Heritage Lottery Funds with the remaining
funds provided by the partnership.
