Cardiomyopathy is a heart muscle disease that affects people of all ages, including babies. It affects around one in 500 people and often runs in families. It is a variable condition, with some people having few or no symptoms while others are more seriously affected. It is a major medical cause of sudden death in those under 35, but when diagnosed and appropriately treated most affected people can live a long and full life.
