More about Camelot Rugby Seniors

Founded 1919 - Refounded 1951

Although many look upon us a new team, in fact this is the third Club of the same name. The first operated in the early 20’s and story has it that a Football team was also run, but let that be forgotten.

The nearest we can get to the origin of the name is a vague story of shallots being eaten at a ‘round table’ in an unnamed pub. This club finished sometime in the late 20’s and all we have left other than some non-playing members is a photo taken in 1919.

The second Club to adopt the name “Camelot” started in the early 30’s, but mainly due to lack of funds never progressed beyond two teams, but war in 1939 brought the Club to an immediate end as the majority of its members disappeared into the Forces in August of that year.

After a lapse of ten years the present Club came into being. In addition to inheriting the name “Camelot” it also took over the assets of the former Club, i.e. two duck boards and one form, also £5 in cash and several ageing members. Despite the last handicap the present organization has grown in a few seasons to three teams and even on occasions, to four.

The move from the original ground, Wood Farm, made the building programme imperative, and the present Club House, built mainly by our own labour, took shape. Many tales can be told of how this building came into being, but we think it best that these remain unpublished, otherwise the number of members who have left the country, will increase.

Thus we come to today when we have our official opening – besides our own Club House we have a sizeable overdraft and nearly two hundred members of various sorts.
