The nearby village of Shalfleet is just a few minutes drive, where there is village store, historic church and The New Inn country pub renowned for its seafood menu.
The harbour town of Yarmouth, home to many yachts and pleasure craft, is about 5 miles to the west and boasts a vibrant yet composed atmosphere in the summer months, with a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants such as The George, for fine dining, Yarmouth Spice, for great Indian food, which also benefits from a large terrace overlooking the Marina, The Wheatsheaf and The Bugle are popular family dining pubs. The Lymington to Yarmouth car ferry docks in the harbour and this, being the closest port to Byde Cottage, is also very convenient as well as benefitting from less congestion.
To the north east, and an approximate 15 minute drive, is the home of world class sailing town of Cowes. Enjoying a very similar atmosphere and vibe to Yarmouth but on larger scale with heightened 'bustle' the town provide a raft of shops, pubs, restaurants for all palates and budgets. For those looking for an excursion to Southampton, the Red Jet will speed you across the Solent and down Southampton Water in just 25 minutes.
Freshwater Bay, a few miles away, has an 18 hole Golf Course spanning Afton Down with spectacular views of dramatic, unspoilt coastline and over the English Channel.
