More about Bonhoga Gallery

Bonhoga Gallery is situated in the Weisdale Mill, originally a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900s. Subsequently it was used as both a butcher’s shop and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994 and, since then, has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the Isles. Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect.

Exhibitions
Bonhoga Gallery is owned and run by Shetland Arts. A programme of seven exhibitions are organised each year for the Upper Gallery featuring local, national and international contemporary visual art and craft.
Complementing this in the stairwell and Lower Gallery are smaller-scale exhibitions and a dedicated space for the display and sale of contemporary work by craftmakers from both Shetland the rest of the UK.

Bonhoga Education Programme
The Bonhoga Education Programme is designed to enable schools to engage with the exhibitions at Bonhoga, through gallery visits and school workshops with creative professionals. The scheme is run in partnership with Creative Links, part of Shetland Islands Council Schools Service and the Art and Design Teachers’ Group.
The programme consists of four elements: a regularly updated Education Resource Pack, Continuing Professional Development for artists and teachers, workshops in schools and nurseries across Shetland and educational activities for visitors to the Gallery.

Bonhoga Touring Programme
Bonhoga has a rolling programme of small exhibitions that tour to five locations across Shetland: Sumburgh Airport (Departure Lounge), Peerie Shop Café in Lerwick and leisure centres in Whalsay, Unst and Yell. These shows offer work for sale by selected artists and makers from Shetland, and change every three months.

The Mill Cafe
In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the newly refurbished Mill Café is a very popular spot for coffee and homemade scones. An extensive lunch menu features locally sourced products and specialities, all prepared on the premises and there is a tempting range of teas, coffees and soft drinks.

The Gallery Shop
Weisdale Mill also has a shop stocked with frequently changing collections of design-led goods, innovative products, cards, books and hand-made papers. The staff are happy to assist with purchases from the Gallery, craft cabinets or touring exhibition, and can arrange postage of any purchases if necessary.
