More about Bewdley Rowing Club

Bewdley Rowing Club offers an open and friendly environment with excellent facilities and around 220 members, young and old. The club was established in 1877 and is located in the small picturesque Georgian town of Bewdley on the banks of the River Severn in Worcestershire. Club members regularly work within the community and local schools to promote and provide competitive rowing and sculling, regularly offering coaching and outings for newcomers wanting to try rowing.

Throughout the year members successfully compete in local and national events including our own two-day annual regatta held at the end of July.

Bewdley Rowing Club has master, senior, novice and junior squads for both men and women, training usually takes place all year round split into two sections a summer and a winter season.

The summer season is usually co-ordinated with the beginning and end of the regatta season, training is mainly done on the water to make the most of the light nights and good weather with a little ergo/gym and circuit work. The club generally goes to three or four regattas per month; these tend to be local, although crews aspiring to go to national and international events may travel further afield.

The winter season is almost an opposite of the summer season. Due to the daylight restrictions, rowing is mostly done at the weekend. Weekdays are then used to increase fitness. This is done by ergo/gym and circuit work, any cross training, swimming, running or cycling is also a benefit. Winter season racing is time trial heads; again the club stays local attending one or two heads per month, with the pinnacle being the Head of the River races on the Thames.

Membership Categories include:
Racing, Recreational, Daytime and Coxing.

We hold various Learn to Row courses throughout the year for those wanting to take up a new sport and also we hold our annual much loved Pub and Club Regatta in the summer.

For our main regatta in July we have races every couple of minutes between 8am and 6pm, we frequently have around three hundred crews each day. A crew could be a single sculler, double scullers, pairs, fours, quads or eights, from first time rowers through to elite experienced oarsmen and women. The competitor’s ages start at 12 or 13, and finish somewhere in the 60s or 70s. This is true of most regattas, but something makes Bewdley one of the biggest and best inland river regattas in the country. The competition is stiff, no matter what the event.

Whether you’re interested in rowing, or just fancy a good day out, Bewdley is the place to be on the last weekend of July. You can come to the Rowing Club and check out the view from the bar, or position yourself along key side to get another great view of the racing.
This two-day weekend regatta at the end of July is Bewdley Rowing Club’s main annual event. It attracts entries from clubs up and down the country, and occasionally from abroad. Racing takes place downstream on the River Severn, for around 800m on Saturday and 600m on Sunday, finishing at the Rowing Club.
