Abbot Hall is one of Kendal’s most impressive historic buildings, Grade I listed and of national significance. The Georgian villa and its stables were built on the banks of the River Kent between 1759 and 1762 by Colonel George Wilson.
The Gallery has achieved a national profile, offering exhibitions for children and adults to experience art at first hand. The beautifully furnished Georgian period rooms display work by J M W Turner, John Ruskin, John Constable and George Romney. The upstairs galleries command views of the River Kent and Kendal Castle and are perfect spaces for showing contemporary work.
