A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Improvement Scheme

The scheme involves the construction of a new 4.7 mile section of the A556 that will connect the M6 junction 19 near Tabley/Knutsford with the M56 junction 7 near Bowdon. We are building a new underpass and seven new over bridges, including the first Highways England ‘green bridge’ designed to provide a safe crossing point for wildlife. Upon completion of the new dual carriageway, works to de-trunk the existing A556 will be undertaken to reduce the carriage width to two lanes and to provide a new cycle, horse and pedestrian route.

Work started in November 2015 and the new road is due to be open to road users in early 2017.
