Tucked away down country lanes, yet easily accessible from both the M20 and M26, this creeper-hung, stone-built free house dates back to at least the 17th century. The two-room bar area has a great brick fireplace, open to both sides and piled high with logs, while the restaurant's vine-clad conservatory opens on to a terrace that's ideal for a pint of Loddon Hoppit or Gravesend Shrimpers and warm weather dining. Menus vary with the seasons, and seafood is a particular speciality: fish lovers can enjoy dishes such as crab and ginger spring roll; tuna steak with Cajun spice and salsa; or pan-fried fillets of sea bass with lobster cream and spinach. Other main courses may include Breast of Duck with Plum Tart Tatin, rosemary roasted new potatoes and plum jus, as well as Fillet of Beef served with dauphinoise potatoes, wilted spinach and a red wine jus.
