The Northern Institute for Cancer Research specialises in diagnosing and treating solid and haematological cancers in adults and in children.
The NICR receives core-funding from Cancer Research UK, the North of England Children’s Cancer Research Fund and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Researchers at the Institute are investigating the basic biology of how and why cancers develop so new treatments can be designed. New drugs discovered by the Institute and other novel treatments are evaluated in clinical trials in adults and children using stratified medicine, where instead of a one-size-fits-all approach treatments are tailored to individual cancer patients' needs. Multi-disciplinary expertise in the Institute allows “bench-to-bedside” research, so that promising new treatments can benefit patients directly.
