Carson’s Volunteers – The Battle Fields of the Somme

North Tyrone Historical Society has been created to help document events from 1912 – 1922, with the amount of significant information already uncovered we hope to create the chance for like minded people to contribute to the gathering of photographs, information, newspaper reports, artefacts from the early 1900s that would visually assist in telling the story.

Belfast to Donegal Ulster’s Opposition

From the time of Home Rule and the Crisis the bill initiated “Unionists in the 9 County Ulster” were opposed and began forming local militias with the determination of Irish Unionists and the strength of opposition growing daily leaders like Edward Carson would go on to create a 100,000 Volunteer Army by January 1913, as Irelands future became a collision course with the Government of the Day darker events would take over and the outbreak of the Great War would engulf the Volunteers. World War One In September 1914, the Ulster Division was formed from the Ulster Volunteer Force which raised thirteen battalions for the three Irish regiments based in Ulster: the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, the Royal Irish Fusiliers and the Royal Irish Rifles, we hope to capture some new information around these times .
