The North East Ambulance Service is an NHS Foundation Trust that provides the people of the North East of England with 999 emergency and urgent care, as well as patient transport services to hospital.

The North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust was formed on the 1 July 2006 following the merger of the previous North East Ambulance Service and part of the Teesside, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Trust. It became a foundation trust on 1st November 2011.

The Trust provides services to the counties of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and Teesside. The Trust employs about 2,000 people and serves a population of 2.6 million. The main Trust Headquarters are based at Newcastle upon-Tyne where the control complex and other administrative offices are situated; but throughout the region, there are 63 Trust locations including 51 ambulance stations, most of which are staffed 24 hours per day.

The A&E tier of the service employs 1,070 staff, of which approximately 58% are paramedics, who deal with, on average, more than 900 emergency calls and 230 GP Urgent calls every day.

The Patient Transport Service (PTS) tier employs 450 staff, who carry out more than 4000 patient journeys every week day, and over 4.03 million miles per year. The Trust has over 100 ambulance car service drivers who work on a voluntary basis and undertake over 194,000 journeys per year.

The Trust became a foundation trust on1st November 2011.
