More about Luton Mandir

The “SAMAJ” was established in 1975 by representatives from all known sections of Hindu Community to provide a Hindu Mandir and a Community Centre in order to meet the spiritual, cultural, educational, social and recreational needs of the Hindu Community. With the support and co-operation of Hindu Community, our present premises were purchased in 1979; extensions were built to provide a hall for Mandir (Temple), Activity Hall and flats for Pujari(Priest) and Cartetaker. Consecration of Deities of Shree Radha Krushna, Shree Ram Lakshman Jankiji, Shree Amba Mataji, Shree Shiv Parivar, Shree Ganeshji and Shree Hanumanji took place in 1993. We are a registered charity with a membership of over 800 Life Members.

All throughout the life of this our Hindu institution besides religious activities many community ventures have been promoted and successfully carried out. To name but a few such as teaching of Gujarati and Hindi languages, conducting music and dance classes. Children’s day trips, receiving visits from Infant and Junior schools and other faith groups acquainting them with basic principles of Hinduism, presentation of cultural events and variety stage shows, dramas and musical dance dramas, Rangoli competition, etc. Health Seminars held covering Coronary Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Venereal Diseases, Aids, Prostate Cancer, Drug Abuse, Women’s health issues viz. Breast Cancer, Fertility, Contraception, Gynaecological problems, Menopause, HRT etc. Healthy Cooking and Diabetic cooking cookery classes conducted. Yoga Classes are held every Thursday evenings. Wellbeing Club serving older members of Hindu Community meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Fund raising events and sponsorships for worthy causes are held.

We have provided support and made facilities available to several Hindu groups and all faith group. The Mandir and the Community Centre are widely used and supported by Hindu Community at large.

Community Development is an ongoing process. Anyone wishing to contribute to make a difference in improving the quality of life is invited to come on board. AGM of the Samaj takes place in June each year when reports of activities and Income and Expenditure Account for the year are presented to the members. Questions are answered and suggestions are received. Election of the Management Committee members is held in accordance with the constitution. It is truly a democratic institution. Management Committee is accountable to the members. Any one over 18 years of age supporting the objects of “the SAMAJ” can become a member. We also have five trustees who oversee SAMAJ’S assets and supply accounts and information to the Charity Commission. We have a good management structure. Sub-Committees carry out different activities. Chairperson of Sub-Committee has a seat on the Management Committee. Mandir and Centre are open seven days a week from 10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. All are welcome.
