More about Habiganj Society UK

HSUK has been involved in since its establishment. We have striven to achieve the many goals and aspirations we initially set out to achieve. We believe in trying to help many different people in different situations. We collected from our members approximately £6000.00 [8 Lack TK and this money was sent to Habiganj Diabetic Hospital and was used to help build the hospice. We also offer advice to students coming over to the UK from Bangladesh and assist them in settling into their new environment, and finally we also help with funeral arrangements.

The Habiganj Society UK organisation has been established since 2005 and over the years we have organised some truly wonderful and memorable events such as the “Live Bangla Concert” which was held over two days. Several famous artists entertained the audience in the pas such as Salma, Asif, Momtaz and the legendry Kumar Shanu and many more. We, as an organisation also strive on recognising the true heroes and heroines that exist within the Bangladeshi community and we aspire to acknowledge the remarkable achievements of such people.

In 2009 we hosted a recognition night for Mr Emon Choudhury who is from Habiganj background and is the first British Bangladeshi to climb The Mount Everest. His incredible feat was truly one to be celebrated. We as an organisation look to do much more in the future to help the Bangladeshi community, we want to prosper as an organisation and reach out to all different types of people from all walks of life. With the help of our community in the UK this can most definitely be achieved. The Bangladeshi community in the UK is indeed an active community who are just yearning to use their dynamic spirit to help the society in which they reside in. Our organisation always places immense importance on philanthropic activities. When the most recent cyclone hit Bangladesh and caused grave destruction, we as an organisation pulled together and donated Two (2) Lack Taka to help our brothers and sisters in Bangladesh. Our main achievement has been the arrangement of a big family event that took place on the 4th October 2009 called “Habiganj Milon Mela 2009.” This event was a major success with attendance of more than 800 people almost all from Habiganj currently living abroad specially in UK. It was an incredibly enjoyable event for all the families involved. Our Honourable Social Minister People Republic of Bangladesh Mostafa Shohid MP also attended our hugely successful event and had the opportunity to see the wonderful work that was taking place.

As well as that, our 2011 “Habiganj Milon Mela 2011” was also a huge success. The event took place at the Royal Suite Perry Barr and accommodated over a thousand people that gathered together for our event.

To date, Habiganj Milon Mela 2013 was the most successful event we organised so far, counting over 1400 attendances including Local MPs, Mayors, Councillors and some Bangladeshi high profile politicians and social community activists.

At the moment we are looking after more than sixty students who have come from Bangladesh and this is an on-going process, which we are actively committed to.

Additionally, our organisation was given an honorary award for our community activities by the Tower Hamlets Council in 2008. This award was given by the mayor at that time. This type of acknowledgments shows that our work is being recognized by those even outside of Birmingham. We as an organisation are looking forward to doing much more in the near future and are always looking for innovative ways and means of helping and engaging with the Bangladeshi community and the rest of the society too.
